The 1970s were a great time for music, but not the psychedelic variety. I guess people got a bit tired of the extravagances of psychedelia and were ready for a more stripped-down sound. Guys like James Taylor and Neil Young flourished, while psychedelic bands either faded away or changed their style (i.e. The Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones). Prog rock bands carried the psychedelic torch, but it had lost its grooviness in favor of experimentation. It wasn't until the mid-1980s that it started resurfacing in a significant way. Here's a few contemporary psychedelic favorites every bit as good as their 1960s forefathers:
The W.A.N.D. - Flaming Lips
Seeds of Love - Tears for Fears
Raspberry Beret - Prince
Anemone - Brian Jonestown Massacre
Under the Milky Way - The Church
The King Is Half Undressed - Jellyfish
Out of Hand - The Mighty Lemon Drops
Christine - The House of Love
I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses
LSF - Kasabian
Pepper - Butthole Surfers
Forever - Charlatans U.K.
Yin and Yan and the Flower Pot Man - Love & Rockets
Let Love Rule - Lenny Kravitz
Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth - The Dandy Warhols
Squares - The Beta Band
There's No Other Way - Blur
Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
Natural One - Folk Implosion
Timeless Melody - The Las
Anyway, ever since I first put The Beatles' Revolver on the turntable, I've been a big fan of this style of music. So, if anyone knows of a post-1960s psychedelic tune that is especially wonderful please point me to it.
