There were a lot of His and Her fashions in the 1970's. Perhaps it could be traced back to the "equality of the sexes" movement that was being rammed down our throat during those days (i.e. Free to Be You and Me). Men began knitting and wearing necklaces and high heels - they also started feathering their hair, requiring more blow drying time than their female counterparts.
On the other side of the coin, the women embraced the Annie Hall look. They started wearing slacks to the office (as late as the 1960's, a woman could be fired for wearing pants to work) and burning their bras. The makeup was skimped down to where it was barely there - the natural look was in, and with it, a lot of the feminine looks fell by the wayside.
